Grenoside in Bloom 2008 - Feedback

Thanks to everyone for your input no matter what that may have been. We received some great comments from the judges.
Particular thanks to the folks who worked tirelessly to remove the litter. Jaw Bone hill has suffered its fair share with the bottom road being closed.
    Regards
    Richard

    Grenoside Conservation Society News

Village in Bloom - dates for the spring judging are between the 25th March - 18th April. As yet the exact date is unknown but we hope to hear soon. Homes and businesses on the routes will be leafleted so that 'extra care' can be taken to spruce up lawns and gardens that the judges will be passing. The Parish Council have awarded us a small sum of money to work with the community to encourage our entry.

We always appreciate any extra help to make this happen and over the past few years some remarkable changes have happened to make our entry even better. This year the Village Green will be a particular highlight and play a central role in  the judges route. You may see over the coming moths other planted area and improvements to increase out chances of gaining a silver gilt (or gold even?).  I think it is worth mentioning those people and businesses who really go that extra mile such as the Post Office, Church and Methodist church, doctors and crematorium. The Old Harrow and Norfolk Arms have always looked excellent but we need commitment from the other pubs to look good -after all it is good for business to look attractive to folks looking for a meal or a drink.

Village Marker Stones - some while ago a plan to replace some of the older Grenoside village name plates was drawn up. Since that time highways have given permission to place upto 5 carved markers stones at the major road gateways. We are pleased to say that the Parish Council have agreed to fund the first marker stone to enable the project to commence. This will be carved by the same person who did the stones for the Green and located on Penistone Road. Our sincere thanks to the Parish Council for their help.

Old School - you may have noticed that the Landmark Company are trying to resell the site. We will continue to monitor the situation as this develops and hope for the best outcome.

Reading Room -this has formally been passed from the Parish Council to the Village to manage once more. A new trust will manage building and are looking to see how the building can be utilised. There was many ideas in the village plan and hopefully the building can be repaired suitable for today's standards. Any help or thoughts (or funding!) would be appreciated. Please contact David Rickards for further information

Woodlands - our work with the Rangers continues over the coming months and plans are already under consideration for dates 2008/09. We are also seeking help and support for a potential woodland festival later this year or early next . If anyone is interested please contact John Sharrocks at SCC Ranger service (via 2500 500). This will have a focus on woodland crafts and educational value that everyone should enjoy.

    HMS Pinafore

Birley Carr Methodist Musical & Dramatic Society will present the operetta ‘HMS Pinafore’ from March 11-15, 2008 at 7-30pm in the Church Hall. One of the best loved Gilbert & Sullivan musicals; it tells the story of a captain’s daughter who falls in love with a sailor on her father’s own ship. The tale of this mismatch in rank & status is colourfully related through songs including some of the best in the G&S repertoire.  An evening of song & humour with colourful costumes and sets promises a most enjoyable evening for all. Tickets selling well from Helen on 0709 881962 or at the door if still available after last years ‘full houses’.

Sword Dancing - Boxing Day 2007

The annual sword dancing display on Boxing Day was very well attended and included a new very colourful dance troupe (if that's the correct word) - Boggart's Breakfast. Some may say that the mat for the Grenoside captain to fall on was a disgraceful break with tradition but others understand he was just trying to keep his new costume clean Open-mouthed.
If you have any photos of the event - there were certainly a lot of photographers there - we will be happy to publish them on this site.

    Thank You from Grenoside HSA

    Grenoside Home School Association
Thank you to everyone who attended the School Fair on 1 December. It turned out to be a real community event with the Grenoside WI providing cakes for the refreshments and running their own very popular cake stall, Grenoside Scouts providing some children’s activities and members of the Mothers’ Union providing sterling assistance with the catering.
There were lots of things for adults and children to do and buy and the wonderfully decorated Santa’s Grotto proved to be a real hit with the children.
Thanks to everyone’s efforts, we raised over £1,500 which will benefit the school next year.

    Adverts

If you are a local business and would like to advertise events on this page please let us know.

    Why do this?

The intention of this site is to pull together links to all the various organisations and groups that exist within Grenoside and also act as a central point of reference for events that are happening in the village - assuming we can get some form of calendar working.

We see this as a community effort and so it will only work if we get co-operation from the various groups.
