    Grenoside Green's First Birthday

A good crowd turned out for the Grenoside Green's First Birthday. After some speeches by the local gentry, everyone was entertained by the Grenoside Sword Dancers and the Newcastle Kingsmen. Thanks to Mat at the Old Harrow for the supply of warming provisions on such a cold day.

    Sword Dancing Boxing Day 2008

What seemed like a record crowd showed up to watch the sword dancing on Boxing Day this year. I hear the dancing was very good, but I must admit to not actually seeing any due to being at the back of the eight-deep crowd! However it was an opportunity for 'people watching' and it does look like an equal amount turn up to catch up with old friends as actually to watch the dancing.

    Grenoside Players - Double Cut

Grenoside Players will present ‘Double Cut’ a thriller by Alfred Shaughnessy at the Community Centre, Grenoside  from 20th – 22nd November 2008 at 7-30.

An ingenious thriller set in a luxury villa on the Costa del Sol. The plot revolves around diamond heiress Olivia Prescott whose villa is disturbed by an enigmatic stranger claiming to be her supposedly dead brother. He seems to know even every trivial detail of their past family life, his papers verify his identity, but Olivia insists with mounting hysteria that he is an impostor. He manages to convince all around him with the exception of Olivia and we begin to question whether Olivia herself is concealing something. The plot thickens when we learn that £10 million worth of diamonds arc missing. Is this what the stranger is after? The complications are finally unravelled in an unexpected revealing denouement to this taut and well-written thriller.

Alfred Shaughnessy has several film scripts and plays to his name but he is best known for his script work and writing on TV drama series including The Informer, Hadleigh, the Cedar Tree and the ever popular Upstairs Downstairs. Double Cut is an adaptation from the film Chase a Crooked Shadow.

Tickets are available from Rita Hampton (0114 2460522) Adults £5, Concessions £4.50

    Grenoside in Bloom

    Dear all,

Just a note of thanks for all your hard work and input into working with the village to create an excellent result.

Grenoside was awarded a SILVER GILT- just short of Gold. We nearly made it ! ...but certainly an improvement from silver we were awarded last year in the large village category.

On a slightly different note, we have a number of events coming up that help to keep our community alive. Can you can help with any of the following?

    1. We are looking to create more village markers stones cost is approx £1500. We have some bids in else where but need some more match funding.

    2. Next year we are aiming to have a scarecrow event linked with the village green, In Bloom work and the Gala. Around Mid June time. We are looking for any one prepared to help sponsor the materials for the local children.

    3. It's also the 25th Anniversary of Sheffield Environment Weeks. Can we put on more events? The village will be celebrating 'Village Life' over the next year and into 2010.

    4. We are hoping to link with the Council Rangers to hold a Woodland Festival next spring (again we have applied for some grants but need match funding).

Please contact me through this website if you think you have any ideas that can contribute

    Thanks
    Richard Godley

    More good news!!!
ps the Village Green has also won an award from CPRE (Council for Protection of Rural England) for the intepretation panels we have installed around the green.

We are sorry to say that the Grenoside Chase has been cancelled this year - the only explanation available is that it is due to 'unforeseen circumstances'.

    Grenoside Gala

The Grenoside Gala was yet another very successful event. Congratulations to the organising committee and everyone who helped make it a wonderful day. Even the weather could only spare a few drops of rain which did not spoil the fun for anyone.
